WELCOME
Good day and welcome to the Fustic House Garden, home of Mr. and Mrs. Kit Braden who has graciously agreed to the Barbados Horticultural Society use of their amazing garden for its 2023 Open Gardens program. We hope you will enjoy the garden and the flowers that are in bloom. This garden commands a panoramic view of the west coast enticing one to stop and sit to enjoy the beauty and tranquility of the surroundings.
INTERESTING FEATURES OF THE GARDEN
As you enter the spacious grounds of eleven and a half acres your eyes and head will go heavenwards to take in the grandeur of the varying mature trees standing so stately with philodendrons climbing their elegant trunks.
The garden has 101 mahogany trees dating over 100 years old and can be described as a magical, mature garden paradise.
For the adventurer and able body, you can start your climb downwards at the first terraced level and as you stroll along listen to the sound of the wind blowing through the flamboyant and woman’s tongue tree and birds chirping happily as you walk through onto the wooden bridge where a beautiful array of palms to include the grandeur of the Bismarck and travelers palm, this area was created by the late Stan Michillini. As you head towards the lower terrace listen to the waterfall and koi pond in the background. There are several water features on the property, to mention the swimming pool with a waterfall built by Oliver Messel that was blasted out of the coral rock. This area gives another amazing view of the garden from the wooden deck overlooking from the pool. There are steps and paths leading to all areas and terraces with many trees providing shade and space for exploring and a paved road leads back to the main level.
WHAT’S NEW
The path along the left of the entrance had its bamboo screen replaced with pittosporum and as you walk along towards the right a window opens across a plateau of varying mature trees and a burst of Acalyphas, shell gingers and various philodendrons added. Keep straight, stop, and relax on the bench directly in front and take in the scenic ocean view via the window that opens beyond. Take the path to the lake with its various islands where you can easily walk across from one side to another of the grounds while admiring the various fish such as koi, various water lilies, a large Amazonian lily and lotus rarely seen in water featured gardens in Barbados.
Take a break and sit on the spacious terrace outside the dining room where teas, refreshments, cakes and sandwiches will be on sale to nourish and satisfy your body as you take in the sound and view of this lovely garden.
