The Open Garden Programme for 2018 continues! Next we have the garden of Prof. Clive & Mrs. Julie Landis, “Edencrest”, Kendal, St. John; Sunday, January 21st 2018; 2.00 pm – 6.00 pm; Admission $15.00 for non-members and $ 10.00 for members.
This lovely garden on the cliff at Kendal commands a panoramic view of St. Philip from Skeete’s Bay, Sam Lords and the Crane in the east to the Airport and parts of Christ Church in the south. The garden has been beautifully and lovingly planned and landscaped by Mrs. Julie Landis whose love of gardening and nature is evident throughout.
All along the driveway on one side is a continuous border planted with an interesting collection of colourful shrubs and smaller flowering plants, clamouring to be seen, while on the other side, an expansive lawn is dotted with a variety of trees, including Ylang-ylang, Cassia, Fat Pork, Pomegranate and fruit trees. Half way along the driveway Julie has assembled an interesting collection of orchids.
Follow the path through Julie’s orchard, vegetable and herb garden where you will find Loquat, Carambola, Coffee, and Cocoa trees and be welcomed by the chickens and many cats. On the brow overlooking the parish of St. Philip is a large area of Bromeliads and an abundance of ornamental pineapple plants then continue up to the large lawn with flowering trees including the yellow Buttercup. If you are lucky you will also see a troop of monkeys frolicking around which can keep one entertained and amused for quite a while.
Julie has introduced several new aspects including a large variety of Hybrid Anthuriums, Phalaenopsis and Dendrobium orchids each in their own secluded area with seating for one to enjoy being surrounded by such beauty. Be sure to look for the Bat plant which should be in bloom. Julie’s creativity can be seen in the several arches each covered in different vines including the Wing Bean – all parts of which are edible, while a Chalice vine covers the arch over the wooden bridge leading to the swimming pool. Sit, admire and enjoy being surrounded by the beauty of this amazing garden.
To the east of the house there are yet more arches covered in vines, the most spectacular of which is the White Petrea now in full bloom. The assortment, varieties and types of colourful shrubs and flowering plants are too numerous to mention. The garden overlooks a pristine swimming pool with Gazebo and Terrace where Teas and cool drinks will be available.
